About Us — F.A.S.T. Smog Training

Overview

Furgerson's Automotive & Smog Training is North County's most comprehensive program for technicians seeking to earn or renew their Smog Inspector or Repair licenses through the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). We provide high-quality, hands-on education for both new and experienced automotive professionals.

Our goal is to ensure that every student is fully prepared to handle real-world inspection and repair scenarios with confidence. We prioritize hands-on experience combined with expert instruction — our instructors are trained professionals with years of industry experience, dedicated to giving students the practical skills and knowledge they need to pass the BAR exams and succeed in their careers.

Mission

Our mission is to get every technician licensed, keep them licensed, and keep them current. California's Smog Check laws change constantly — our classes are built to meet technicians wherever they are in their careers, from a first-time candidate walking into Level 1 to a repair technician renewing a license they've held for twenty years.

Our courses

We offer five BAR-aligned classes for both new and experienced technicians:

Level 1 Smog Check Inspector Training: Engine and Emission Control Training — helps aspiring Smog Check technicians get their foot in the door. It's the first step toward licensure through the State of California, and one of the ways you qualify to take the Level 2 class.
Level 2 Smog Check Inspector Training: Inspection Procedures — the class required before you can take the state licensing exam for the Smog Check Inspector license.
BAR Specified Training: Diagnostic and Repair — the ASE alternative (A6, A8, and L1) for technicians with 2+ years of engine experience who are seeking their Smog Check Repair license. It also serves as the 5-year renewal for repair technicians who do not hold their ASEs.
BAR Certified Repair Technician Update Training — the two-year renewal that keeps a repair technician's license active.
BAR Citation Training — training to reactivate your smog license after receiving a citation from the Bureau of Automotive Repair.

Our instructors are BAR-certified Smog Training Instructors and ASE Master Certified Technicians with decades of real-world experience.

Bryan J. Perrin

Bryan has over 35 years in the automotive repair industry, starting in service stations and chain stores. He earned a Certificate of Competence in Automotive Technology from MiraCosta College and became involved in early smog programs — MVPC (Motor Vehicle Pollution Control) and then BAR 84. Over the next 20 years he became ASE certified in 24 areas, including Master certifications in Automotive and Medium/Heavy Duty. After 8 years of owning his own repair shop, he returned to what he loves: working on vehicles and teaching. Since 2010 he has worked full-time as a diagnostic technician and BAR-certified instructor. He has written magazine articles, co-authored a book, and developed two California state-certified update classes. Today he teaches for F.A.S.T., serves as a subject matter expert for the California Bureau of Automotive Repair, provides training for State Referees, and has presented multiple times at the California Automotive Teachers Association.

Richard Stratford

Richard has over 30 years of experience in the automotive repair industry, building extensive expertise across a wide range of vehicle systems. He is an ASE Certified Master Technician and holds additional certifications including A9, F1, G1, and X1, and is a state-certified Vehicle Safety Systems Inspector highly regarded for his advanced diagnostic skills on European, Asian, and domestic vehicles. For more than 15 years, Rich served as an assistant/analyst in the research and development of fuel injection systems for F & B Throttle Bodies in Cardiff, California. After earning his BAR-certified instructor credentials in 2011, he taught Level 1 Smog Check Inspector Training and BAR Specified Training: Diagnostic and Repair classes at the California Institute of Auto Technology. He later joined F.A.S.T., where he continues to teach Level 1, BAR Specified, and Level 2 while sharing his industry knowledge with students.

Our campus

Our campus is Escondido Auto Tech, 255 N. Ivy Street, Escondido, CA 92025 — a working independent shop, so you'll train on the same equipment you'll use in the field.
